Empowering teens to build the confidence and strength to thrive; through social fitness and inspiring training.
Alternative Girls Fitness offers teen girls a supportive, encouraging, competition-free space to make friends, develop new skills, achieve goals and build self-esteem.
AGF is run by Alternative Womens Fitness, a group focused on inspiring fearlessness and friendship in females through physical movement and fun.
Alternative Girls Fitness is for teens aged 14 – 17 who identify as female, trans, and/or non-binary.
Studies have found girls from age 14 onwards drop out of sport at more than twice the rate of boys. This is attributed to a number of factors, including lack of access, funding and quality training for girls’ sports and fitness as compared to boys; social stigma, sexism and prejudice based on notions of traditional gender roles; peer pressure and lack of positive role models.
However, sports and fitness are vital for the healthy psychological development of teens. Not only are teens who participate in group fitness physically healthier, they also have higher levels of confidence, lower levels of anxiety and depression, and learn to be self-assured in teamwork and social situations. Importantly, girls in this age group are bombarded with negative and esteem-damaging messages about how their body should look; and physical activity is proven to be the best inoculation against this. Physically active teen girls consistently report far higher levels of body confidence than inactive teen girls, regardless of size, weight or other aesthetic factors.
Alternative Girls Fitness offers quality training for teen fitness. We don’t dumb down our classes, or focus them on weight loss or aesthetics, just because they’re for girls. Our focus is firmly on teaching teens the strength they already have, and developing that further, into self-belief, the development of new skills, the ability to achieve goals, and confidence. We also prioritise friendship and fun, because exercise should not be a punishing experience, but a joyous and uplifting one!
We offer an inclusive, welcoming space free from judgement and sexism. We offer positive role models in the form of successful professional female sportswomen as coaches. We offer fun classes to inspiring musical soundtracks. We encourage, exemplify, and teach teens to THRIVE.
